Disability Pride Month
July is Disability Pride Month. Even as card-carrying members of the autism community for about 18 years now, we really didn’t know a ton about it and suspected we might not be alone in that regard. We decided to do a little research and wanted to share what we learned.
We’re linking to 2 great articles we hope you will check out:
one from The Arc of Massachusetts that talks about how and why to celebrate Disability Pride including the history; and
one from the Weinberg Family Cerebral Palsy Center at Columbia explaining the evolution and significance of the Disability Pride Flag which is truly a fascinating story. Not sure we can do it justice by shortcutting so highly, highly recommend you read it.
Zoe’s early attempts to portray the Disability Pride Flag in bracelets with different types of beads can be seen above next to the official flag. The designs are still a work in progress but excited to have the opportunity to put a Zo Much More spin on it - honoring the flag creator Ann Magill’s decision to waive the copyright and enter the flag into the public domain.
